The Raiders have yet to release the financial details of All-Pro punter Shane Lechler’s contract, but rumors are that the four-year contract will make Lechler the highest paid punter in NFL history.

Lechler currently holds the highest yards per punt average in NFL history at 46.8 yards per punt. Especially with the offense still in search of rhythm, Lechler’s powerful leg will be needed to keep the Raiders in games until Jamarcus develops into what we hope he can become.

With Lechler locked up, Al Davis and the Raiders aim to re-sign Pro-Bowl corner back Asomugha.

After being snubbed the past two years, Nnamdi Asomugha and Shane Lechler both made the AFC Pro Bowl Rosters as starters for 2008.

Despite playing six stellar years at cornerback, including an 8 interception year in 2006, Asomugha finally made the pro-bowl as the AFC’s starting corner back. Although Asomugha only has one interception for 2008, opposing teams havn’t dared to throw towards his side. For the first 14 games, opposing teams have only thrown in Asomugha’s direction 26 times completing only 12 of those passes. Those players having success against Asomugha? Future Hall of Famers, not to mention freaks of nature, Tony Gonzalez and Randy Moss.

After hearing of his selection today, Asomugha had this to say:

“It’s really refreshing when you get these types of moments when people can say, ‘Yeah, you’re one of the best. It’s not about the start and the finish it was everything in between that kind of makes you feel good about the journey.”

Source: Sfgate.com

Snubbed in the past few seasons, Shane Lechler made the Pro Bowl as the AFC’s punter. A three time pro bowler, Lechler averaged nearly 49 yards per punt this year, good for second best average in the AFC.

With the way the 2008 season has gone for the Raiders, Al Davis firing Kiffin mid-season, the Raiders failing to close the fourth quarter, and facing another post Super Bowl XXXVII year with less than 6 wins, the league finally selected deserving Raiders into the Pro Bowl.

Asomugha's First Career Pro Bowl Selection

As the Raiders 3-11 current record stands, the Raiders are looking at another 3rd to 6th round pick in the draft. After selecting Jamarcus Russell over Calvin Johnson and Adrian Peterson in 2007, and having McFadden hurt for most of the 2008 season while fellow rookies Matt Ryan and Matt Forte show impressive years, it’s hard to imagine what the Raiders will come away with in the 2009 draft.

One thing is known however, two bright and soon-to-be free agent Raiders have received their due justice and will be traveling to Hawaii in February.

For the 2008 AFC Pro Bowl team, Asomugha and Lechler will be joining:
